In our previous article we looked at the two broad categories of law. In this post we are going to look at 4 major sub categories of law which are commonly referred as fields of law that are commonly practiced. These sub categories of law will require lawyers who have specialized in each individual category as it may not be practical to find a lawyer who is a specialist in all.
Here are the 4 major fields of law.
#1 Family Law
Family law will mainly focus on legal issues that affect individuals within the family context. These legal issues will include but not limited to domestic partnerships, civil unions, marriage and divorce, as well as child welfare, child abuse and adoption. These types of cases will often be heard in family courts and also require lawyers who have specialized in family law.
#2 Labor Law
Labor law will mainly focus on legal issues between employers and their employees. These legalissues include but are not limited to wages and compensation, harassment and discrimination. In most cases, the plaintiff will often be a member of a union therefore they will be represented by their union’s lawyer is such cases. In the event the plaintiff is non-unionized then they will be represented by a labor lawyer.
#3 Business Law
Business law commonly referred to as corporate will mainly focus on legal issues within the corporate context. These legal issues may include but not limited to formation of a business, dissolution of a business, administration of a business, and disputes between business enterprises. In most cases, businesses will have internal lawyers commonly referred to as in-house counsels to handle their legal issues and will only seek the services of external lawyers if they are in need of specialized legal services that their in-house counsel doesn’t have.
#4 Civil Rights Law
Civil rights law will mainly focus on legal issues that involve the violation of individual or public liberties by the government or other big corporations. These legal issues may include but not limited to discrimination and unfair practices that may infringe on the rights of an individual or a group of individuals to access employment, education, and housing, as well as express their opinions. In most situations, these cases are usually fronted by civil rights activists with the help of lawyers who have specialized in and have a passion for civil right law.
There are many other fields of law each of which require the specialized services of lawyers in those respective fields therefore it’s important for individuals to make a point of understanding these categories before they seek legal counsel. This will help in finding the right lawyer to handle their legal issues.
